Of course God loves him even though he's a sinner. That's the whole point. The cost is worth bearing in mind though. In return for God's love, we're supposed to do two basic things:

1. Don't be a dick.
2. Help people out when we can.

"I assure you, as often as you did it for one of my least brothers, you did it for me." It's from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, verse 40. It's a good reminder for the faithful, and it typically gets some comment. My sister-in-law, who is extremely conservative, was offended by it as being excessively liberal (which it is: Christ was most definitely a liberal). And a lot of people who like it. They're the silent Christians. They accepted Christ's salvation, and quietly went about doing what they were supposed to do, rather than beating on a pulpit.
