When we started Event Metrics, it only hired 6 people... and we couldn't see hiring an hr person to do payroll, etc. We farmed a LOT of that stuff out... you can get your accounting done on a contract basis, your payroll, your accounts payable and even receivable. You can pay someone to do your marketing, etc. Being your own boss and being a one-man-show (one-person-show?) is not synonymous. In fact, anymore, it's a pretty rare business that can be done entirely solo for very long.
